Impetus to Invent

Imagine having a highly skilled, awesome workforce, but some of your best people have to stand there and flip a switch to reverse the direction of your tape machine, over and over again. Something had to be done. By implementing an adjustable top and bottom stroke sensor and an easy-to-use HMI screen for inputting the number of cycles, the tape winding process was quickly automated. Now the operator can set it and forget it and move on to higher-value tasks.

Problem Solved

Lessons Learned

With so many sensor options, the best solution here was to use a very nice inductive linear encoder. It’s a great product when the environment is dirty, and you need something really reliable.

What Was Unique

Low-cost quick wins in automation are really nice for a first-time client. It’s great to date before you get married and do a big project!

What Was Challenging

Controls upgrades into old homegrown systems are absolutely achievable, but they have their challenges. Usually, the lack of documentation and the level of investigation can be larger than anticipated. Industries that would use this type of project
